[46338] (FT-1865 Bundjord: Erik 53år g. husm.m.jord smed f.Sildre P)

Bosted: Bukkeskind, Bundjord og Leiknæs, Lenvik.

When did Erik Anderson emigrate to the USA? He is listed in the 1875 Census for
Lenvik, Troms at Leiknes gård and in the 1880 Census for Quincy, Houghton
County, Michigan, USA as Erick Erickson. His daughter, Anne Gurine Erickson,
emigrated from Lenvik 07 June 1880 to Michigan and she is living with him in
the 1880 Quincy Census. His wife, Ingrid Haraldsdatter, died in Lenvik 01 July
1873. His youngest son, Hans Christian Erickson, emigrated from Lenvik 01
August 1882 to Houghton County, Michigan, USA. Thank you in advance for your
help in locating this information.

I found these in Trondheim passenger lists.
23 June 1880 Ane G. Eriks.(26) b.Hammerfest
Trondheim to Mich.
9 Aug.1882 Hans Eriks.(20) b.Lenvig Trondheim to Mich.
( You cant use name of town due to Tami's spamguard )
Passage was paid from the US for both.
I've looked in all the passenger lists for Erik Andersen or Eriksen from Slidre
Søgn ( birthplace )or Lenvigs. and found nothing. The 1880 recorded records for
Houghton Co. Mich. are incomplete so I cant see when Erick Erickson or his
daughter Annie came to the US.
Ron Berg-Iverson
----------------------------------------------------

Ron: Anne Gurine's passage which was paid for in the USA could have been paid
for by her father, Erik Andersen, if he emigrated in 1876-1879 or more probably
by her husband-to-be who emgrated in 1879 and lived in the same household as
her and her father in 1880. I have asked all the same questions as you are
asking and then searched for the answers and found none! That is why I posted
the query---hoping that someone like you would have a question or answer I
hadn't thought of. Thanks again and again and again!!!

Stan, its possible Erik Andersen used his fathers surname
( Anders Erichsen )As for Anne being in Quincy 12 June 1880
for the Census I dont believe they could travel from Norway
in 1880 that fast!! It is possible theres an error in the Lenviks records and
she left in 1879 not 1880.The Ane G. I found coming from Hammerfest leaving
Trondheim June 1880 fits her profile.Anne still lived in Bundjord in 1775 but
could have gone to Hammerfest. Why Erik is not shown leaving Leknæs
is another mystery.
Ron
-----------------------------------------------------

Ron: The American custom was for all members of the same family to use the same
surname and therefore Erik and Anne G may have decided to both use Ericksen. Up
until the 1880 Quincy Census all references to him in Norwegian records were as
Erik Andersen---the typical Norwegian patronymic. Anne G's husband-to-be was
Johannes Pedersen who is listed in the 1875 Census for Sørøysund (H.fest
langsokn) at Gamvik mellom. He was born at Talvik, Finnmark 09 March 1857. Good
point about the short time lapse between the date on Anne G's leaving papers
and being in Quincy, Michigan little more than a month later---but steamships
plied the waters fairly quickly. I'd be surprised if she left Lenvik in 1879
since there are a number (I recall 17?) names leaving Lenvik in 1880 before
hers I agree about the mystery of why Erik is not listed in the Lenvik leaving
records! I canot help but wonder if he went to another parish after 1875 and
before he emigrated. Stan
